St.Stephen’s Church of Ooty dating back to the nineteenth century. It is one of the churches developed under British Raj. The whole church was constructed using excellent wood. The timber used in the church was taken from Tipu Sultan’s royal residence on the island of Srirangapatna, after the destruction of Tipu Sultan in the hands of Britishers. Some of the attractions of this church are exquisite wooden design, the work of art of Last Supper, stained glass windows with various scenes like the torturous killing of Christ and Mother Mary holding child Jesus in her arms. This church has an unusual characteristic of four hammers like structures, tied on transformed V shaped wooden planks using wires. When these wires are pulled, a musical sound is produced. A visit to this superb house of worship is an extraordinary encounter. Christmas day is a special day of euphoria and noble cause. Individuals commend the introduction of Christ by offering prayers, singing carols and trading wishes. Churches everywhere on the world depict a festive atmosphere with lovely decorations. For those folks visiting the Queen of Hill Stations, Ooty, during this Christmas season, a visit to the oldest church of the Nilgiris will be an enjoyment.
