The regional transport authority has sent a proposal to the government seeking a ban on movement of heavy goods vehicles on Ooty to Burliar,Ooty to Gudalur,Ooty to Kunjappanai and Thalakundha to Masinagudi stretches. This proposal was under the section 115 of the motor vehicles act which are from the recommendation of the former Nilgiris superintendent of police Murali Rambha. Which is on behalf of the road safety and to stop unwanted accidents and save lives of the people. Also suggested restriction on operation of vehicles or trailers having more than three axles exceeding gross weight of 25,000 kg and 10 wheels. According to the proposal despite the GPS based highway patrolling system and significance data capturing system(RADMS) the initiatives taken by authorities to bring down the accidents. The proposal also points out that the Nilgiris district being hilly terrain has many harpin bends, narrow stretches,short and blind curves and many places steep gradients. The drivers coming from the plains are unaware of the district. Which could make them unable to control their vehicles in case of emergency.
