Mukurthi National Park

Mukurthi National Park is a protected area located in the western corner of the Nilgiris this park was created to protect the keystone species the N ilgiri Tahr. The park is occupied by the green grassland and shrubland mixed with sholas in a high altitude area of high rainfall with near freezing temperature and high winds. It is home to an group of endangered wildlife including royal Bengal tiger and Asain elephant but its main mammal attractions in the Nilgiri tahr. This park was previously called as Nilgiri Tahr National Park. The is part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve India’s first International Biosphere Reserve. This place has a good plantation growth of several non native tree species were mintroduced to the areas to satisfy the fuel wood demand. These include four wattle species such as black wattle, silver wattle, green wattle and blackwood. Eucalyptus became the preferred plantation tree. The area was declared as wildlife sanctuary on August 1982 and upgraded to a National Park on 15 October 1990 in order to protect the Nilgiri tahr.
