The Government Botanical Garden is located in Udhagamandalam(Ooty) which was laid out in the year 1848. The garden was divided into several sections around 55 hectares and it lies on the lower space of Doddadbetta peak. The garden is maintained by the Government of Tamilnadu Horiculture Department. It lies between 2250-2500 metres above sea level. The garden enjoys a temperate climate with an average rainfall. The monsoon is received during the month November to February. The architect was Willam Graham Mclvor. During the time of the British control vegetable cultivation was the market carried by the settlers and others. Subscribers recevied vegetables for free of cost. It took 10 years to complete the layout of the garden. The garden is surrounded by thousand species of both exotic and indigenous of plants, shrubs, trees, herbal and bonsai plants. The garden consists of several lawns with some flowering blossoms, pond with lilies, beds of flower and fern laid out in a Italian style and variety of medicinal plants are also available.
